fundamental is an architecture and design studio based in rotterdam, the netherlands. we specialize in a wide array of work and scale: from custom-made furniture to iconic urban developments. with every project we seek to create micro-universes that enrich and fulfil the lives of everyone it touches.

we work collaboratively with various specialists to create unconventional solutions and a renewed perspective of everyday spaces. we bring international experience with expertise from concept and design development to technical drawings and construction coordination.

we create personal and poetic, but functional and rational outdoor and indoor spaces to live, work, create and enjoy life. we believe that your environment defies who you are or who you aim to be. and we’re happy to help you create the environment you deserve to be surrounded with.

we especially enjoy working with unusual assignments and challenging plots: long and narrow or huge and undefined, next to the highway or hard to reach ones in the middle of nowhere, on a complex landscape on top of the mountain or on a tiny plot cramped between existing buildings.

founder
fundamental was founded by vladimir konovalov (1987), who is an award-winning dutch architect with ukrainian roots. his latest awards include best commercial interior design [2008], best integrated design [2011], a+ architizer award [2018] and best home and interiors award [2019].

being born in a post-soviet industrial city of mariupol [ukraine], he was always eager to transform the existing environment to create better living experiences that actually motivate to enjoy life and stimulate to become a better version of yourself.

he graduated from tu delft [2012, nl], architectural association sssh shanghai [2008, cn], kharkiv architecture university [2010, ua] and kuindji art school [2004, ua].

before establishing fundamental architects, vladimir konovalov had a chance to work on high profile projects around the world at international studios oma/amo and mecanoo for 7.5 years, where his latest project as a project architect was the second highest skyscraper in the netherlands – the grace in the hague.
